‘Demobilised officer, finding peace incredibly tedious, would welcome diversion. Legitimate, if possible; but crime, if of a comparatively humorous description, no objection. Excitement essential... Reply at once Box X10.’ Hungry for adventure following the First World War, Captain Hugh ‘Bulldog’ Drummond begins a career as the invincible protectorate of his country. His first reply comes from a beautiful young woman, who sends him racing off to investigate what at first looks like blackmail but turns out to be far more complicated and dangerous. The rescue of a kidnapped millionaire, found with his thumbs horribly mangled, leads Drummond to the discovery of a political conspiracy of awesome scope and villainy, masterminded by the ruthless Carl Peterson.

Bulldog Drummond (Audible Audio Edition) Sapper Roy McMillan Naxos AudioBooks Books

I selected this book because I happened to see on TCM one of the Bulldog Drummond movies filmed in the 1930s. It was a fun, very 1930s movie to watch and I noticed in the credits that the screenplay was based on the book -- so I had to read it. The book is written in that very stilted style of the 1930s. The plot is neatly wrapped up. Both could be turn-offs to modern audiences but reading "Bulldog Drummond" is like reading an historical novel from, well, the 1930s. McNeile wrote lots of other Bulldog Drummond books and I'll read them as soon as I get past five other books I've purchased recently. Bottom line - give McNeile a chance. Imagine you're back in time. The 1930s. Reading the latest from H.C. McNeile. You'll love it.

Bulldog Drummond (Audible Audio Edition) Sapper Roy McMillan Naxos AudioBooks Books Reviews

This is definitely a page turner. Bulldog Drummond is a dare devil thrill seeker. There are plenty of moments where you wonder how he's going to get out of a situation and you won't want to put the book down. If you like the movie series, you will really like the book.
Love the language that is so quaint for the time it was written. Fun to picture it as a movie but can't imagine who could play Drummond!
a classic mystery series writen in the early part of the 20th century. The books were made into movies and heard on radio. a great read but dated language. Give Captain Drummond a try. The opening of the radio show went this way; (A sound of footsteps and a foghorn echoing over the waterfront.) then the announcer says, Out of the fog and into his american adventures comes Bulldog Drummond..
More of an adventurous young officer at a loose end, Bulldog Drummond, cracks a case and saves England at the same time. He does it at the request of a maiden in distress. He brings in others who are bored civilians now out of active duty. Their repartee alone is worth the reading of this novel. Best of all, our hero is not handsome but most plain if not ugly. His military training adapts to deal with various criminal types who underestimate him to their peril.
This story is the stuff of my childhood...movie serials of Perils of Pauline and Buck Rogers...the westerns where you knew who wore the white hats and who wore the black! Bulldog and his wartime pals have all the virtues and the villains have all the vices. Yes, some scenarios are dated and everyone rather one-dimensional but it's continuous action as Bulldog foils every plot. While most of the vets from the horrors of WW1 were more content to return to a peaceful life, this group is hooked on excitement and continues the one-for-all brotherhood of those hard days. But I think it also mirrors the post-war eat, drink and be merry philosophy of that era where life shouldn't be taken too seriously. Bulldog is definitely the precursor of all the action heroes...James Bond, the comic heroes and robotic ones. Ah, if only these guys were real.
I don't want to sound like a snob, but I believe most good writers have some kind of English Lit academic background--at least enough of an education to have some kind of writing discipline. But every now and then I come across an author who is simply a "natural." I think Mickey Spillane was one. And now, after reading my first ever Bulldog Drummond story, I think Cyril McNeile is one, but on a far more sophisticated level.

Who knew? The guy (aka "Sapper") was an Army officer! No offense to the military, but that organization is not known for producing witty, urbane, funny writers who are capable of creating sparkling dialogue and solid masculine suspense.

Now, why did Crime Classics select this book for its 25th anniversary edition? It may be that this is McNeile's best. I wouldn't know, having only read one of the series. I would imagine he degenerates into formulaic plots sooner or later, and writes to satisfy his publisher's demand.

So all I can say is THIS ONE is superb. I hope the others I have ordered from the series are as good.

I somehow had this title/character in mind before I was exposed to the book in , so I was pleased to read it.

First, you need to know that Sapper is a pseudonym used because the British officers were prohibited from publishing in their own names. Sapper was the colloquial name for Engineers who were also trained to fight. Second, please know that all of the books attributed to Sapper are not by the original author but the later ones are by a friend. Wikipedia will explain all this thoroughly and separate the books by author, if you are interested. Third, you need to know that the racist comments were thoroughly acceptable at the time, specifically against Germans and Jews. And women, of course, need to be rescued, flowers that they are. Fourth, the book presented here is the one I read and includes, at the end, a commentary by a British professor which is totally accessible to anyone. I found this to be really helpful in dealing with the racism but also the books' fame as the predecessor of James Bond. I highly recommend reading this either before or after reading the novel.

Beyond all that, let me say that I have purchased more Sapper books and look forward to reading them--once I made up my mind to just ignore the racism.

When I watch British films with some American characters I always wait for the "dissing" of Americans "across the pond." To get even, I'll just say the language of these upper class men is a hoot.
